Dir. George Cukor. 1938, 95 mins. 35mm. With Katharine Hepburn, Cary Grant, Lew Ayres, Doris Nolan, Edward Everett Horton. Shortly after RKO released her from her contract (following a string of flops), Hepburn reteamed with Cukor and reprised a role that had been a Broadway hit for her a decade earlier. The result was one of her most sophisticated and successful movies, and a singular mix of the side-splitting and the poignant, with some of the most complexly drawn characters in the history of screwball Hollywood comedies. In Holiday, Hepburn plays Linda Seton, an unconventional socialite who finds a kindred spirit in her sister’s free-spirit, acrobatic fiancé, played by Grant. The pair is, as always, marvelous together, although they’re given ample support by Ayres and Nolan as Linda’s siblings, the former a wayward alcoholic, the latter a straight arrow who’s likely too conventional for Grant’s everyman needs.
