The promise of mobile computing extends beyond the portability of information. Mobile computing offers its greatest promise in the ability both to bring information into, and to aquire information from physical environments and the objects within them. Mobile and wireless applications being created today for public, industrial, and research environments use this "context awareness" to bring online and physical realms closer together.

Robert Fabricant, Director of Research and Development, Organic, Inc., will present eDocent™, a mobile museum information system designed in collaboration with the Museum of the Moving Image, and utilize it as a case study to discuss interaction design for digitally activated physical environments.

Vincent Luciano, Vice President, Mobile Computing Systems, Symbol Technologies, will discuss some of his company's large-scale industrial applications for factories, hospitals, and retail environments which merge mobile devices with specific environments. Recent products from Symbol include finger-mounted scanners and vehicle radio computers.

Casey McCarthy, Mobility Evangelist, Microsoft Corp., will provide an overview of key emerging, converging, and sometimes conflicting technologies enabling the wireless computing revolution, and will provide real-world scenarios for their use. In addition, he will show upcoming software and devices embodying these technologies.

Tobias Höllerer, Department of Computer Science, Columbia University, will discuss their Situated Documentaries project. Their experimental wearable augmented reality system enables users to experience hypermedia presentations that are integrated with the actual outdoor locations to which they are are relevant.

A reception sponsored by the Microsoft Mobility Division will follow the event.

Seating is limited. Tickets may be purchased in advance by calling 718-784-4520 during business hours.

The Pinewood Digital Dialogue is presented in cooperation with the Continuing Education & Public Programs and The New Media Lab at The Graduate Center, CUNY.

About eDocent™

eDocent™
is a prototype wireless information system developed by the Museum of the Moving Image in partnership with the Internet services company Organic, Inc. Using eDocent™, a visitor may browse multimedia information about an object on a wireless device, such as a tablet computer or PDA. The information is presented automatically based on the visitor's proximity to the object. Visitors may also bookmark objects for later exploration on the Web. The design of eDocent™ anticipates a world in which a museum visitor's own portable computing devices, including mobile phones, PDAs, and eBooks, are the primary platform for browsing and sharing information in public spaces.

Prototype development is supported, in part, with public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs Cultural Challenge Program. Major support has also been provided by The William Fox, Jr. Foundation and Citigroup.
