Anything Can Happen: The Films of Marcel Łoziński

Ongoing

Location: Bartos Screening Room

All films directed by Marcel Łoziński. Total running time: 95 mins. In Polish with English subtitles.

Front Collision (1975, 10 mins. Digital projection) On the verge of retirement, an exemplary but overworked train conductor causes an accident that destroys his reputation. Łoziński and his crew staged the retirement ceremony, which the authorities denied the worker. Switching from black-and-white observational scenes with color for the staged sequences, Łoziński denounces the authorities’ official speak and the cruelty of their bureaucracy.

So It Doesn’t Hurt (1974, 45 mins. Digital projection) In 1974, Łoziński made a documentary, The Visit, after watching a television program about a solitary woman farmer. Seeing how the government-sponsored media used the story for its propaganda, Łoziński decided to show cinema’s interference in people’s lives. He continues his meditation, this time in a gentler vein, in So It Doesn’t Hurt, in which he revisits the same woman some twenty years later. The film serves as a testimony to quiet endurance and intellectual vigor.

Anything Can Happen (1995, 40 mins. Digital projection) Łoziński’s young son befriends elderly people in a park and queries them about universal topics, such as the meaning of love, of suffering, and the existence of God. The film’s idyllic setting, uplifting musical accompaniment and the sheer beauty of its cinematography, frame this hybrid feature as a delightful farce in the spirit of Voltaire’s Candide, or Łoziński’s lasting inspiration, Jean Vigo’s À propos de Niece
