Filmed in Santo Domingo with a cast of Cuban-American émigrés, Bitter Sugar incorporates archival documentary footage to construct a naturalistic tale of love and disillusion. A student in Havana, Gustavo, struggles with his faith in the revolution as his family is confronted with the harsh realities of daily life.
