Bordering on Absurd: An Evening with Alex Rivera and Greg Berger

Directors Alex Rivera and Greg Berger, longtime associates, will engage in a lively evening of film and conversation about the impact of filmmaking on political events and organizing. They will screen clips from their extensive bodies of work, including Rivera’s Sleep Dealer, Why Cybraceros?, and his new work ICE_EL Hielo, and Berger’s Spring Breakers Without Borders, Narco-Mania, and Now! (¡Ahora!) and engage in a public dialogue.

Since 1995, the satirical and unnerving films of Alex Rivera, winner of the prestigious Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award and Alfred P. Sloan Feature Film Prize at the 2008 Sundance Film Festival, have questioned the complex relationship of technology to immigration and power. His creative work has also covered the real-life political organizing of undocumented community organizers on both sides of the U.S. Mexico border.

Greg Berger, a.k.a. “Gringoyo,” is a filmmaker, journalist, and former producer for Mexican television network Telesur, known for his humorous and sometimes controversial coverage of Mexican and Latin American social movements on Narco News TV. He co-directs the video program at the School of Authentic Journalism and teaches film at Mexico’s Autonomous University of the State of Morelos.
