In one of his most chilling performances, as the menacing Max Cady, Robert Mitchum plays an ex-con seeking vengeance on the family of the lawyer who convicted him. He torments them without breaking any laws, with the goal of driving the lawyer to commit a crime. The film features an atmospheric score by Bernard Herrmann.
