Cinema Mécanique: Nick Yulman and his Mechanical Orchestra

Ongoing

Presented as part of the Museum’s Armory Arts Week Extended Hours (8:00 to 11:00 p.m.)

As an encore to his Signal to Noise performance in January, artist/composer Nick Yulman returns to the Museum to present live music for three silent films about automation, invention, multiplicity, and music. He will perform original scores on his guitar accmopanied by a “robotic” orchestra of homemade mechanical instruments. The films include Georges Méliès‘s L’homme-Orchestre (The One Man Band) (1900), Charley Bowers’s A Wild Roomer (1927), and Maya Deren and Alexander Hammid’s Meshes of the Afternoon (1943). The scores were originally composed for the film series Cinema 16.

Brooklyn-based artist Nick Yulman works with sound in a variety of contexts including mechanical musical instrument installations, interviews, field recordings and pop songs. Click here for more about Yulman.

The performance is part of the Museum’s Armory Arts Week Extended Hours, when the Museum will be open late from 8:00 to 11:00 p.m. Beer/wine will be available at the Museum café.

Tickets: $10 public / Free for Museum members. Tickets may be purchased by calling 718 777 6800. Museum members may call 718 777 6800 to reserve tickets.
