Down Down the Deep River

Ongoing

Preceded by a live musical performance by Will Sheff of Okkervil River and followed by a discussion

U.S. Dir. Will Sheff. 2014, 42 mins. World premiere. New Hampshire, 1987: The sci-fi fantasy world of two bullied sixth-grade boys invades reality and changes their lives forever. An explosion of the music video into a narrative film, Down Down the Deep River grew out of the recent work of acclaimed indie band Okkervil River, and directed by front man Will Sheff. The song of the same name appears in multiple incarnations throughout the film, interpreted in ‘80s appropriate styles (New Wave, soft rock, rap). A poetic, abstract tribute to classic children’s fantasy films, Down Down the Deep River was shot in and around Sheff’s hometown in rural New Hampshire and stars local actors.

Preceded by Vindmøller (Denmark. Dir. Margaret Rorison. 2014, 3mins. Digital projection.) Monolithic wind turbines are triple-exposed on one roll of color 16mm, finding four generations of grain. Interstates (Dir. Jeffery Chong. 2014, 3 mins. Digital projection.) A road trip through the New England winterscape, on hand-processed 16mm film with

in-camera effects.
