Ongoing

Presented in collaboration with MUBI

Crafting dynamic cinema poetry out of archival footage, Austrian avant-garde filmmaker Peter Tscherkassky explores the materiality of film and its aesthetics. Tscherkassky is being featured this month on curated online cinema MUBI. This is a special opportunity to see some of his finest films on the big screen, all in 35mm prints courtesy of Sixpack Films and Canyon Cinema. The 75-minute program includes L’ArrivéeInstructions for a Light and Sound MachineOuter SpaceComing AttractionsDream Work, and his latest, the acclaimed softcore mash-up The Exquisite Corpus. Anyone attending these screenings will receive a free one-month subscription to MUBI.

L´Arrivée (1998, 3 mins.) A pulsating, fragmented homage to the Lumiéres’s seminal 1895 film Arrival of a Train at La Ciotat.

Instructions for a Light and Sound Machine (2005. 17 mins.) A man suddenly realizes that he is not only subject to the gruesome moods of several spectators but also at the mercy of the filmmaker.

Outer Space (1999, 10 mins.) This cinematic shocker uses Hollywood footage to conjure up a beautiful inferno.

Coming Attractions (2010, 25 mins.) Using early cinema images, Coming Attractions reveals the exhibitionistic quality of early filmmaking known as the Cinema of Attractions.

Dream Work (2001, 11 mins.) The film details the dream world of a woman who, shortly after falling asleep, enters into a landscape of light and shadow.

The Exquisite Corpus (2015, 19 mins.) The Exquisite Corpus is based on various erotic films and advertising rushes. Myriad fragments are melted into a single sensuous, humorous, gruesome, and ecstatic dream.
