Dir. Jean-Luc Godard. 2001, 97 mins. 35mm. With Bruno Putzulu, Cécile Camp. An artist (Putzulu) begins an ambitious project on the subject of love and mourns the end of his own romance with a mysterious woman. In a pointed reversal of the color scheme of Steven Spielberg’s Schindler’s List, Godard depicts the present in photographic black and white and the past in lurid, oversaturated, video-produced color. This film, whose French title translates as “Elegy for Love,” is Godard’s elegy for his own films, suffused with historical memory, and for cinema in general.

Followed by a book signing for Film After Film: (Or, What Became of 21st Century Cinema?) with J. Hoberman in the Moving Image Store.
