SCREENING

Merantau

Ongoing

Dir. Gareth Evans. 2009, 134 mins. With Iko Uwais, Sisca Jessica. In West Sumatra, Yuda, a skilled practitioner of Silat sets off on his merantau, a centuries-old rite of passage that will send him from his farming village to Jakarta. In the city, a chance encounter puts Yuda on the run from a group of human traffickers. With escape seemingly beyond his grasp, Yuda has no choice but to face his attackers. The Raid, which opened to rave reviews and is currently playing in theaters, is the second collaboration of Evans and Uwais after Merantau, their first action film. Both films showcase the traditional Indonesian martial art Pencak Silat and both films feature fight choreography by Iko Uwais and Yayan Ruhian. If you love The Raid, don’t miss this screening of Merantau.
