SCREENING

National Lampoon’s Animal House

Ongoing

Dir. John Landis. 1978, 109 mins. With John Belushi, Tim Matheson, John Vernon. This seminal and hugely popular gross-out comedy was co-written by Harold Ramis in his screenwriting debut. The Delta Tau Chi fraternity led by the manic Bluto Blutarsky (John Belushi in an iconic performance) explodes the decorum of early 1960s New England college life with a drunken anarchy that echoes the contemporary counterculture. While many later college comedies would focus solely on partying, Ramis’s script is filled with enough satire to place Animal House among the most sharply political comedies of the 1970s.
