Night of the Living Dead

Dir. George A. Romero. 1968, 75 mins. Restored DCP. With Duane Jones, Judith O’Dea. This is how it all began. Romero’s seminal zombie film laid the groundwork for the indie horror film. But there has yet to be another film about the shambling, cannibalistic undead that’s as genuinely scary as the original. This black-and-white nightmare, in which a group of terrified people hole up in a farmhouse as legions of hungry zombies move ever closer, is both a streamlined work of horror and a metaphor for American racism in the 1960s.
