With director Mohanad Yaqubi in person

U.S. Premiere

Dir. Mohanad Yaqubi. 2016. 62 mins. In Arabic, French and Italian with English subtitles. Drawing on recently discovered and rarely seen archival footage, Ramallah-based director Mohanad Yaqubi stitches together a politically and formally provocative history of Palestine and Palestinian filmmaking. From eye-opening films shot by the Palestine Film Unit, a group founded in the 1960s to serve as the cinematic front of the Palestinian movement, to footage of Jean-Luc Godard’s visit to Palestine for the making of Here and Elsewhere, to sequences shot in modern-day Palestine, Yaqubi deftly constructs a primary historical narrative from material that was largely captured by Palestinians but for disparate purposes, and most of which had been either lost or never seen in this light. Yaqubi’s debut film is a pointed, personal, and profound essay about the struggle for resistance, dignity, and self-determination.
