As a deadly turf war consumes the city of Richmond, California, Donté Clark, a young poet, uses his gift for words to transcend the turmoil around him. When he sets out to mount a hip-hop-inflected retelling of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet—with the gangs of Central and North Richmond standing in for the Bard’s Montagues and Capulets—the project ignites an urgent community dialogue. But can his art do anything to stop the city’s cycle of violence? Weaving together interviews with Richmond residents and the real-life behind-the-scenes drama that unfolds during the making of the play, Romeo is Bleeding is a hard-hitting portrait of a scarred city trying to heal itself.
