Sweaty Betty

Ongoing

Introduced by Robert Greene, Filmmaker-In-Chief at the Murray Center for Documentary Journalism at the Missouri School of Journalism

With John Wilson in person

Dirs. Joseph Frank, Zachary Reed. 2015, 93 mins. Digital projection. With Rico Mitchell, Seth Dubose, Floyd Rich II, Uncle Bay, Tarich Rich, Floyd Rich V, Chrissy Rich, Charlotte the Pig, Cassy the Dog. In a cramped row house on the border of Washington, D.C., two versions of big dreams take place. Floyd and his family have raised a 1,000 pound pig in their backyard, and are determined to turn her into the team mascot for their beloved Washington Redskins. Floyd puts his plan into motion, but the pig, named Miss Charlotte, draws unwanted attention. A few blocks away, Rico and Scooby, two teenage single fathers and best friends, are hanging around the neighborhood. As they scheme up a better life for themselves and their children, they unexpectedly come into possession of a rangy puppy, a.k.a. an opportunity. Is Sweaty Betty a sly prank? A work of amateurism? A radical, handmade reclamation of a lost independent film aesthetic? Is it documentary or fiction? It may be all or none of these, but it is definitely unlike anything else you’ve ever seen. Screening with Temporary Color (Dir. John Wilson. 2016, 14 mins. Digital projection. With David Byrne, Bill Ross IV, Turner Ross, Ira Glass, Adam Horovitz, Sean Price Williams.), a true crime concert doc about David Byrne and two escaped convicts.
