In honor of the documentary Helmut Berger, Actor, which has its New York premiere directly beforehand, the Museum presents a special First Look Festival screening of Helmut Berger’s breakthrough performance in Luchino Visconti’s controversial epic, The Damned. After their anti-Nazi patriarch is murdered by a trusted long-time employee, a dynastic German clan descends into chaotic decadence under the rise of the Third Reich. Berger plays the young scion of the Von Essenbeck family, who spirals into drug addiction and sadism, and gives a legendary impersonation of Marlene Dietrich from The Blue Angel. Berger was nominated for a Golden Globe named Best Supporting Actor by the New York Film Critics Circle. “Perhaps the greatest film, the film that I think means as much to the history of film as Shakespeare to the history of theatre”—Rainer Werner Fassbinder.
