Dir. Guillermo del Toro. 2001, 107 mins. 35mm. With Fernando Tielve, Eduardo Noriega, Marisa Paredes, Federico Luppi. Guillermo del Toro’s third film, The Devil’s Backbone, perfected the directorial voice that would make him a critical and popular success. Outwardly a classic ghost story with period trappings, this film about the spooky goings-on at a Spanish Civil War–era orphanage is also a full blown tragic melodrama, a mystery, a meditation on toxic masculinity and a love letter to improvised families. The movie is the subject of Guillermo del Toro’s The Devil’s Backbone, a new stand-alone making-of book by Matt Zoller Seitz and Simon Abrams, built around a long interview with del Toro. All three will be present for a post-screening discussion, which will be followed by a signing in the Museum Store.
