The Hip-Hop Fellow

Ongoing

Dir. Kenneth Price. 2014, 79 mins. Digital projection. Hip-hop goes Ivy League in this enlightening documentary, which follows Grammy-winning producer and sampling wizard 9th Wonder (aka Patrick Douthit) as he embarks on a fellowship at Harvard University’s trailblazing Hip-Hop Archive. Tracing 9th Wonder’s journey from producer to professor, The Hip-Hop Fellow offers a crash course in everything from the art of sampling, to the most influential hip-hop albums of all time, to the cultural influence of rap. The result plays like “the coolest college course you never took” (Paste Magazine), while offering a compelling case for hip-hop as a rich field of study.
