With Beau Bridges, Lee Grant, Diana Sands, Pearl Bailey, Louis Gossett, Jr. An indolent American princeling (Beau Bridges) purchases a row house in then-black brownstone Brooklyn. Hal Ashby’s first feature, directed from Bill Gunn’s script, is among the funniest social comedies of the period. The hero goes native as did the cast, which largely moved into then ungentrified Park Slope during the shoot as Pearl Bailey commuted daily from Broadway where she was starring in the all-black production of Hello, Dolly!.
