Location: Redstone Theater

India. Dir. Buddhadeb Dasgupta. 2016, 88 mins. DCP. U.S. Premiere. In Bengali with English subtitles. With Sudipto Chatterjee, Kajal Kumari, Ananya Chatterjee, Chandan Roy Sanyal, Paoli Dam. Internationally renowned auteur Buddhadeb Dasgupta directs this seductively surreal, folkloric fable. Set amidst the lush Bengal countryside, it follows three fantastical characters: a traveling circus girl (Kajal Kumari) who performs as a tightrope walker, a postman (Chandan Roy Sanyal) who leaves everything behind to live atop a tree, and a wealthy, oddball raja (Sudipto Chatterjee) who leads a filmmaking crew on a tiger hunt. As their stories intertwine, The Bait offers both a feast of dazzling, fairy tale images and a serious commentary on Indian class relations.
