SCREENING

Young Frankenstein

Ongoing

Location: Redstone Theater

Dir. Mel Brooks. 1974, 106 mins. Digital projection. With Gene Wilder, Peter Boyle, Marty Feldman, Madeline Kahn, Teri Garr. Mel Brooks’s second comedy smash of 1974 is the rare film that both mercilessly spoofs and sincerely celebrates a genre, here the black-and-white horror films of the 1930s. Nominated for two Oscars and featuring gorgeously cinematography by Gerald Hirschfeld, this legendarily quotable film features Wilder in perhaps his greatest role as Dr. Frederick Frankenstein, (pronounced Frankensteen not Frankenstine!) an American grandson of the infamous scientist. Hellbent on proving his own worth and sanity—not an easy task considering his wild hair and short temper—the semi-mad doctor enlists the help of a borscht-belt Igor (Feldman). Chaos, hilarity, and syncopated soft-shoe jazz performances ensue.
