This March is a big month at MoMI with major events including a new exhibition devoted to Spanish visionary artist José Val del Omar; the twelfth annual First Look festival; and the return of Marvels of Media, celebrating media-makers on the autism spectrum. March is also Women’s History Month, so we are pleased to call attention to the work of women filmmakers, including a variety of contemporary film artists in First Look (including Lola Quivoron, Chloe Abrahams, Sophy Romvari, Terra Long, and many more) and a special focus on Chantal Akerman with the series Jeanne Dielman and its Roots. (Akerman is pictured above in Je tu il elle [1974].) Please find highlights below. 

This past weekend, we welcomed Michael Schulman, New Yorker writer and author of the new book Oscar Wars, who introduced a screening of Todd Haynes’s Safe (showing again this weekend), and shared anecdotes about the first Oscar snub (Bette Davis, ignored for her acclaimed performance in 1934’s Of Human Bondage). Signed copies of his book are available now in the Shop. And please join us on March 11 when Charles Bramesco, critic and author of Colors of Film: The Story of Cinema in 50 Palettes, will introduce Singin’ in the Rain and sign copies of his book.  

Cinema of Sensations: The Never-Ending Screen of Val del Omar 
Opens Friday, March 10 
This new major exhibition highlights the immersive multi-sensory work of the visionary Spanish artist, inventor, and filmmaker José Val del Omar. Cinema of Sensations features a selection of his photographs, archival materials, films, collages, and inventions that influence the work of artists and filmmakers to this day, while also examining Val del Omar’s creative evolution during a pivotal time in Spanish history. The exhibition also featured commissioned pieces by contemporary artists Sally Golding, Matt Spendlove, and Tim Cowlishaw; Duo Prismáticas; Esperanza Collado; and Colectivo Los Ingrávidos, who interpret and draw on his work for inspiration. First Look 2023 
March 15–19 
MoMI’s annual showcase for innovative new cinema, First Look highlights 30+ works with filmmakers from more than 20 countries. For five days, the First Look Festival takes over the Museum, including not only screenings but also in-person appearances and dialogues from the filmmakers to further enhance the viewing experience. Marvels of Media  
Starting March 30 with an Awards Ceremony and Exhibition Opening 
The Museum’s second annual celebration of media-makers on the autism spectrum features a ceremony, festival, and exhibit. Through the Marvels of Media, MoMI supports the creative pursuits of all media-makers on the spectrum, regardless of age or background.

Jeanne Dielman and Its Roots 
March 31–April 9 
Chantal Akerman’s Jeanne Dielman, 23 Quai du commerce, 1080 Bruxelles was named the greatest film ever made in this year’s edition of the Sight & Sound film poll, which occurs every ten years. To celebrate this masterpiece, the Museum presents a special screening series presenting the film along with the movies and avant-garde works that inspired Akerman when she made the film in 1975.
