2001: A Space Odyssey (70mm) and presentation by Michael Benson

As brilliantly engineered as the space program itself, Stanley Kubrick’s mysterious and profound epic—“the ultimate trip”—is about nothing less than the beauty and the banality of civilization, blending cool satire, passages of avant-garde cinematic inventiveness, and an elaborate vision of the future. The celebrated new 70mm print, supervised by Christopher Nolan, was struck from new printing elements made from the original camera negative.

Michael Benson’s exhaustively researched and beautifully written Space Odyssey: Stanley Kubrick, Arthur C. Clarke and the Making of a Masterpiece (Simon & Schuster, 2018) may be the definitive book on Stanley Kubrick’s film. Prior to a 70mm screening of the film, Benson will make a special presentation talk about the creation of 2001: A Space Odyssey, using clips, still images, and newly discovered Polaroids by Kubrick. He will also examine the film’s uncanny predictions of today’s minimalist devices and artificial intelligence.
