Dir. Penny Marshall. 1992. 128 min. DCP. With Geena Davis, Tom Hanks, Lori Petty, Madonna. Set in the 1940s and based on the real All-American Girls Professional Baseball League the films follows the women on the newly formed Peaches team and their less than enthusiastic manager. During World War II, with many men fighting abroad, women began taking on jobs that previously only men were able to hold like professional baseball player. The film follows the women’s struggle to gain fans and respect but with Penny Marshall’s comic touch throughout. And don’t forget, “There’s no crying in baseball!” Recommended for ages 10 and up.
