The singular Argentine filmmaker Solnicki (Kékszakállú) returns with this richly strange cabinet of curiosities, at once a tribute to the fading grandeur of old Vienna and a cryptic poem on the themes of modern rootlessness and the malaise of the monied classes. Greek actress Papoulia, best known for her bravura performances for Yorgos Lanthimos, here plays a version of herself alongside Chaplin (granddaughter of Charlie), as the two stroll the eerily empty city in search of the perfect antique apartment for the former and her family. Struck with an unplaceable sense of melancholy, Papoulia comes away unsatisfied with every beautifully appointed room they visit, a circumstance endured by Carmen with increasing exasperation. Governed by a musical logic, Solnicki’s film is a sensual and synesthetic delight that culminates in one of current cinema’s most eloquent needle drops. North American premiere

About the Filmmakers:

Gastón Solnicki is an Argentine director and producer, whose films include Süden (2018); Papirosen (2011), which premiered in Locarno and the Best Film Award at BAFICI; Kékszakállú (2016), which won the FIPRESCI for Best Film in Venice and was selected by Artforum as one of the ten best films of 2016; Introduzione all’Oscuro (2018), which premiered in Venice 75; and A Little Love Package (2022), which premiered at Berlinale’s Encounters. His films have recently been acquired by MoMA. 

Robert Greene is a filmmaker and editor whose latest feature documentary, Procession (2021), premiered at the Telluride Film Festival, was nominated for an Emmy, an Independent Spirit Award, a Peabody, and was shortlisted for an Academy Award. His other films include Bisbee ’17 (2018), nominated for Best Documentary at the Gotham Awards; Sundance award-winning Kate Plays Christine (2016); the Gotham Awards-nominated Actress (2014); Fake It So Real (2011); and the Gotham Awards-nominated Kati with an I (2010). Greene co-created the Murray Center for Documentary Journalism at the University of Missouri and serves as its Filmmaker-in-Chief.
