A Night of Knowing Nothing

Friday, Jul 29 at 7:00 pm

Location: Bartos Screening Room

July 29: Introduced by film critic Siddhant Adlakha

Dir. Payal Kapadia. 2021, 97 mins. In Hindi and Bengali with English subtitles. A stash of letters is discovered in a cupboard at the Film and Television Institute of India. Written by L, a film student, they are addressed to an estranged lover. Through these missives we learn about drastic changes taking place at the school and in the lives of young people across the country who take to the streets to protest widespread discrimination. Winner of the L’Œil d’or award for Best Documentary at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival, this debut film by Payal Kapadia deftly merges reality with fiction, weaving together archival footage and student protest videos to create a vital tapestry of the personal and the political. With its dreamlike editing rhythms and revelatory use of sound, A Night of Knowing Nothing is both an essential document of contemporary India and an affectionate, knowing look at youth fighting the injustice of their time.

Tickets: $15 / $11 senior and students / $9 youth (ages 3–17) / free for MoMI members at the Senior/Student level and above. Order tickets. Please pick up tickets at the Museum’s admissions desk upon arrival. All seating is general admission. Review safety protocols before your visit.
