A Place in the Sun

Ongoing

Location: Redstone Theater

Dir. George Stevens. 1951, 122 mins. 35mm. With Montgomery Clift, Elizabeth Taylor, Shelley Winters. Theodore Dreiser’s novel An American Tragedy becomes an American movie classic in the hands of George Stevens and his Oscar-winning cinematographer William C. Mellor (Giant). The Chicago-set drama stars Clift in perhaps his most iconic role as a working-class man dissatisfied with his factory job while romantically torn between Winters’s plain, sweet, and naive coworker and Taylor’s indescribably beautiful society girl, a triangle that leads to violence. A Place in the Sun is the height of pristine, psychologically acute 1950s Hollywood melodrama.
