Location: Bartos Screening Room

Dir. Jean-Luc Godard. 1965, 99 mins. 4K DCP. With Eddie Constantine, Anna Karina, Akim Tamiroff. In Godard’s eccentric, wildly unconventional work of sci-fi film noir, Lemmy Caution (Constantine), the epitome of a secret agent, is tasked with killing an inventor whose computer, Alpha 60, holds a totalitarian society in its thrall. Love and art are at stake in a surreal yet humane work of dystopian sci-fi as only Godard could envision it. This newly restored DCP highlights the inventiveness of Godard’s production, shot almost entirely at night in the then newly transformed Parisian district La Défense. Alphaville opened the 1965 New York Film Festival and remains an unparalleled classic of the French New Wave.
