Rivers and Tides: Andy Goldsworthy Working with Time

Dir. Thomas Riedelsheimer. 2001, 90 mins. Digital projection. A surprise success, Thomas Riedelsheimer’s beautifully crafted documentary depicts the magical relationship between art and nature by offering a visually intoxicating portrait of famed artist Andy Goldsworthy. Gorgeously photographed and masterfully edited, the film follows the bohemian free spirit Goldsworthy around the world as he demonstrates his unique creative process. From his long-winding rock walls and icicle sculptures to his interlocking leaf chains and multicolored pools of flowers, Goldsworthy’s painstakingly intricate works are made entirely of materials found in nature.

Followed by a preview screening of:

Leaning into the Wind

Dir. Thomas Riedelsheimer. 2017, 93 mins. Digital projection. Sixteen years after the release of Rivers and Tides, director Thomas Riedelsheimer returns to capture Goldsworthy’s recent work. Leaning into the Wind follows Goldsworthy’s exploration of the world and the impact of the past years on his self and art. He incorporates his body into ephemeral and permanent artworks in rural landscapes and in cities, in San Francisco, St. Louis, New England, Brazil, Scotland, and France, and begins to use massive machinery and crews on his bigger works. Riedelsheimer’s exquisite and intimate film reveals the mind and personality of one of the most extraordinary and innovative artists of our time. The film will open theatrically in New York at Film Forum, on Friday, March 9.
