Artist Talk with Ari Melenciano + Reception for The Situation Room

Friday, May 20, 2022 at 7:00 pm

Reception celebrating the final weekend of The Situation Room, with artist talk at 7:00 p.m.

Commissioned by the Museum and organized by guest curator Lindsay Howard, The Situation Room series has featured work by seven artists or artist teams who each created four original GIFs presented as two-month installations on the walls and ceiling of the visitor elevator. It’s an exhibition environment that offers a unique and intimate encounter with the work. Artist Ari Melenciano will join us for a discussion with Deputy Director for Curatorial Affairs Barbara Miller around her work, To Sift, currently on view, and a reception. The Situation Room closes May 22.

The Situation Room series is made possible by support from GIPHY Arts.

Free with RSVP.

Ari Melenciano is a Brooklyn-based artist, designer, and creative technologist whose research and practice explore the relationships between various forms of design and sentient experiences. She is a creative technologist at Google Creative Lab, professor at NYU’s Interactive Telecommunications Graduate Program, and founder of Afrotectopia, a social institution that is imagining, researching, and building at the nexus of new media art, design, science, and technology through a Black and Afrocentric lens. To Sift explores our navigation of constant stimulation, external sources, and forces, and serves as a visual metaphor for the importance of intentional reception for aligning self-cultivation.
