Location: Redstone Theater

Introduced by Annette Insdorf

Dir. Andrzej Wajda. 1958, 103 mins. DCP restored by KinoRP. With Zbigniew Cybulski, Ewa Krzyzewska. This is perhaps the most internationally beloved film from Polish art-film auteur Andrzej Wajda, and was selected as one of the top ten films of all time by both Martin Scorsese and Francis Ford Coppola in the recent Sight and Sound directors survey. A visually stunning and historically specific work of political cinema, Ashes and Diamonds takes place on the last day of World War II in a small town, and concerns a Home Army soldier (Zbigniew Cybulski, often dubbed the Polish James Dean) tasked with carrying out a major political assassination. The screening will be followed by a book signing with Annette Insdorf.

Tickets: $15 ($11 seniors and students / $9 youth (ages 3–17) / free for children under 3 and Museum members at the Film Lover and Kids Premium
