Being John Malkovich

Dir. Spike Jonze. 1999, 112 mins. 35mm print courtesy of Universal Pictures. With John Cusack, John Malkovich, Catherine Keener, Cameron Diaz. Spike Jonze established himself as one of the most inventive directors of music videos and commercials, often blending live action, animation, and puppetry. With a mind-bending script by Charlie Kaufman, Jonze made an astonishing feature film debut with his audacious and fantastical movie about a downbeat puppeteer (Cusack) who discovers a portal leading into the head of movie star John Malkovich.
