Beyond Aladdin: Stories and Stereotypes about Arabs and Muslims in Film

Ongoing

Location: Bartos Screening Room

Film talk and panel discussion with Film Scholar Terri Ginsberg of the American University of Cairo, Media Personality Aymann Ismail, and Danette Zaghari-Mask, an attorney with the Council on American-Islamic Relations. Moderated by MoMI Neighborhood Council member Shireen Soliman and Visual Artist Ahmed El Shaer.

This panel discussion and screening of clips (from popular movies and art house cinema) will explore ways in which Arabs and Muslims have been portrayed on the screen. From Aladdin and other Hollywood offerings for young audiences to experimental animations created by visual artists, the program will present a dialogue on shifting narratives and the implications of representation in media. Panelists will discuss how Edward Said’s concept of Orientalism is still relevant to contemporary representations of identity. All ages are welcome to attend.

This program is organized by the Neighborhood Advisory Council of the Museum of the Moving Image.
