SCREENING

Boogie Nights

Friday, Feb 4 at 7:00 pm

Location: Redstone Theater

Dir. Paul Thomas Anderson. United States. 1997, 155 mins. 35mm. With Mark Wahlberg, Julianne Moore, Burt Reynolds, Don Cheadle, John C. Reilly, William H. Macy, Heather Graham, Nicole Parker, Philip Seymour Hoffman. Paul Thomas Anderson’s career kicked into high gear with his second film, a glorious and poignant paean to the extravagances of the 1970s set in the underground porn world of Los Angeles. By focusing on the humanity of the characters as much as the unorthodox trappings of their sex- and drug-fueled lifestyle, Anderson creates a monumental movie interrogating American excess without ever judging its characters. Robert Elswit’s sinuous cinematography, an expertly curated soundtrack, and modest performances from an extraordinary cast of actors who scrupulously avoid showboating contribute to an experience at once electrifying and deeply melancholy.
