Dir. Sarah Gavron. UK. 2007, 101 mins. 35mm. With Tannishtha Chatterjee, Christopher Simpson, Lalit Ahmed. Nazneen (Chatterjee) is a Bangladeshi immigrant in the UK whose life in a loveless marriage is hard enough before the September 11 attacks in the U.S. exacerbate the anti-Muslim sentiment across the pond. Lonely and vulnerable, she finds herself in an illicit relationship with Karim, who is not only much younger but also slowly radicalizing under the weight of discrimination. Based on the novel by Monica Ali, Brick Lane is a tender depiction of the Bangladeshi community, immersing the viewer in a time and place marked by crisis without reducing the very full characters to political allegory.
