Celebrate Juneteenth at MoMI

Jun 17 — Jun 19, 2022

Celebrate Juneteenth, the holiday commemorating the official end of slavery in the United States, and stop by MoMI for a weekend of media-making activities for the whole family that celebrate Black heritage.

On Friday, 2:00 p.m–5:00 p.m., and Saturday–Sunday, 1:00 p.m–5:00 p.m., visit our new media lab and green-screen yourself into a fantasy world inspired by The Princess and the Frog, a modern retelling of the classic Grimm fairy tale featuring Disney’s first Black American princess. Learn how to design a game that takes the player on a magical adventure into a Black utopian future. Or explore our Behind the Screen exhibition with a scavenger hunt, and learn more about legendary actress Lena Horne and civil rights activist Martin Luther King, Jr.

All weekend long, come dressed to impress in your most royally gorgeous outfit, and you may be crowned Mx. Juneteenth by recording a video or GIF of yourself at MoMI and posting on TikTok or Instagram with the hashtag #JuneteenthAtMoMI. Mx. Juneteenth will receive a dual or family MoMI membership!

On Sunday at 5:00 p.m., we will announce the winner of Mx. Juneteenth in our Fox Amphitheater with a Moving Image Open Mic hosted by Sainabou Njai of MoMI Community Partner African Peach Arts Coalition. Participants can share a poem, song, or dance that connects with the themes of Juneteenth or celebrates Black identity; participants will choose a video to play silently as they perform. If you’re interested in performing, sign up here!

Admission is free for kids 12 and under.
