Day after…

Saturday, Mar 19, 2022 at 12:30 pm

Location: Redstone Theater

With director Kamar Ahmad Simon in person

Dir. Kamar Ahmad Simon. Bangladesh/France/Norway. 2021, 115 mins. In Bengali with English subtitles. DCP. A century-old paddle steamer called the Rocket journeys from capital city Dhaka to coastal villages in this 360-degree portrait of contemporary Bangladesh, complete with a literal upstairs/downstairs class divide. Over several days above and below deck, in the cozy captain’s quarters and damp open-air corners where third-class riders claim space, politicians clash with radicals, young lovers bicker, strivers hustle and perform, the destitute beg and revolt, the deckhands navigate mechanical calamities, and a young YouTuber relays his experience for viewers at home. Evoking Hollywood yarns set on boats, trains, and planes, as well as Herman Melville’s The Confidence Man, Day after… floats a cross-section of Bangladeshi society down a river that’s observed and experienced, but also richly, buoyantly metaphorical. North American premiere
