Deathdream

Friday, Sep 9 at 7:30 pm

Location: Bartos Screening Room

Dir. Bob Clark. 1974, 88 mins. 35mm (faded). With Richard Backus, John Marley, Lynn Carlin. Following his horror cult classic Children Shouldn’t Play with Dead Things (1972), Clark made his second zombie feature Deathdream, an ominous retelling of the W. W. Jacobs’s short story “The Monkey’s Paw.” Andy, an American soldier, returns home from the Vietnam War to his family’s great relief—at least initially. A series of bizarre deaths flank Andy’s return and his curious behavior increasingly disturbs the household, as he is as unsettlingly withdrawn as he is unexpectedly volatile. The film expresses the zombie’s capacity to embody the horrors of war as an inevitably self-destructive force, and the film also unfolds as an allegory for drug addiction.
