Dr. Strangelove: or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb

Sunday, May 2 at 4:00 pm

Dir. Stanley Kubrick. 1964. 95 mins. DCP. With Peter Sellers, George C. Scott, Sterling Hayden, Slim Pickens, Keenan Wynn. Kubrick reinvents the nuclear suspense thriller, then in vogue, as an absurdist black comedy in this brilliant evocation of cold war paranoia. Dr. Strangelove, co-written by Kubrick and Terry Southern, strikes just the right manic, irreverent, sexually charged tone, creating a satirical masterpiece that is one of the seminal counterculture works of the 1960s. Towering over the cast, including Scott as the blustering General Buck Turgidson and Hayden as “precious bodily fluids”–obsessed General Jack D. Ripper, is Sellers, a triple threat as meek RAF Captain Mandrake, bungling U.S. President Merkin Muffley, and, of course, the mad scientist title character and inventor of the doomsday machine that may wipe out humanity as we know it.
