Ongoing

5:00 to 5:30 p.m. Gallery Talk with Dan Richter (Exhibition preview continues through 7:00 p.m.)

7:30 to 10:00 p.m. 70mm screening of 2001: A Space Odyssey

Attend an exclusive exhibition preview (5:00 to 5:30 p.m.) featuring a gallery talk with Dan Richter, who is best known for his role as Moonwatcher, the man-ape, in the opening sequence of Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey. Richter has had a long career as a mime, choreographer, actor, director, producer, and author. His book Moonwatcher’s Memoir (Carroll & Graf, 2001) is about his role in 2001. Richter’s 2012 memoir The Dream Is Over (Quartet Books, 2012) describes the years he spent living and working with John Lennon and Yoko Ono.

The exhibition Envisioning 2001: Stanley Kubrick’s Space Odyssey presents an in-depth exploration of the story, design, and visual effects of the landmark film that, more than 50 years after its release, continues to influence, confound, and inspire. The 70mm screening will be preceded by a conversation with Katharina Kubrick (Stanley Kubrick’s daughter), and 2001 actors Keir Dullea and Dan Richter, moderated by MoMI Director of Curatorial Affairs Barbara Miller.

2001: A Space Odyssey. Dir. Stanley Kubrick. 1968, 149 mins. (plus intermission). 70mm. With Keir Dullea. As brilliantly engineered as the space program itself, Stanley Kubrick’s mysterious and profound epic—“the ultimate trip”—is about nothing less than the beauty and the banality of civilization, blending cool satire, an elaborate vision of the future, and passages of avant-garde cinematic inventiveness.

This program is sold out, but tickets are still available for the 5:30 p.m. Exhibition Preview and Special Screening of 2001: A Space Odyssey (70mm) with Katharina Kubrick, Keir Dullea, and Dan Richter in person.
