Ewelina Rosińska (First Look Shorts 1)

Saturday, Mar 25, 2023 at 1:15 pm

Location: Bartos Screening Room

With Ewelina Rosińska in person

The films of Ewelina Rosińska are ecstatically impressionistic diary works whose rhythmic montages create expansive connections between sounds and images that fuse disparate spaces, feelings, and moments in time. Presented for the first time in North America at First Look 2023 are Rosińska’s 2020 film Earth in the Mouth and her latest work Ashes by Name Is Man, a selection of the 2023 International Film Festival Rotterdam.

Ashes by Name Is Man
Dir. Ewelina Rosińska. Germany/Poland. 2023, 20 mins. No dialogue. 16mm-to-DCP. Rosińska: “The film shifts between a portrait of my 80-year-old grandparents and my view on the elements and imagery of the national Catholic narrative in the Polish landscape. The title is borrowed from a church notice board in Nowa Grobla, in Roztocze. At the center of my explorations is the rage of the hills of Roztocze, while Krakow and Lviv form the boundaries of the area in which I was shooting. The film deals with the meaning of the Polish und Ukrainian landscape in physical, cultural, and historical terms. It is my personal approach to the experience of growing up in Poland, where the war and postwar history is constantly present and the process of forming a national identity has never lost its meaning.” North American premiere

Followed by:
Earth in the Mouth
Ewelina Rosińska. Germany/Poland. 2020, 20 mins. 16mm-to-DCP.
Rosińska: “Like a photo book the film creates new images and relationships between the shots, it resembles a journey of impressions where the outlines of the world undulate. Between faith, anarchism, and tourism, in Poland or Germany, between simple gestures and everyday life in Portugal, Brazil, and Greece. Portrait of life between different countries, among friends and family.” North American premiere
