A wild, twisted sci-fi adventure set in the near future, eXistenZ follows visionary game developer Allegra Geller (Leigh) whose virtual reality experience can be accessed through direct bodily contact with fleshy controllers. On the run from assassins, Geller and her coworker Ted (Law) move between physical and virtual worlds, in and out of “reality.” Cronenberg revisits his obsession with humans and technology with this disorienting film that J. Hoberman has called “one of the great underappreciated movies of the late 1990s.”
