Dir. Ruben Östlund. 2014, 120 mins. DCP. With Johannes Kuhnke, Lisa Loven Kongsli, Clara Wettergren. Jury Prize winner at the Cannes Film Festival, Swedish writer-director Ruben Östlund’s Force Majeure is a perceptive, sardonic portrait of a husband and father’s response to a potentially devastating avalanche at a ski resort where he is vacationing with his family. A “brilliant, viciously amusing takedown of bourgeois complacency, gender stereotypes and assumptions and the illusion of security,” according to Stephen Holden (The New York Times). This screening is accompanied by an essay by environmental scientist Steve Koller about responses to climate change and environmental hazards.
