French Cancan

Sunday, Jan 23 at 1:00 PM

Location: Redstone Theater

Dir. Jean Renoir. France. 1955, 104 mins. DCP. In French with English subtitles. With Jean Gabin, Françoise Arnoul, María Félix. In his amazing cinematic second act, Jean Renoir created a series of dazzling Technicolor period pieces in the 1950s. The greatest of them was French Cancan, a riot of color and movement set in 19th-century Paris starring the legendary Jean Gabin as the impresario who opened the Moulin Rouge. Historical drama, love-triangle romance, and music-filled extravaganza all at once, Renoir’s thrilling vision climaxes in an extended, splendid burst of dance and color that needs to be seen to be believed.
