Dir. Alexander Stitt. Australia, 1981, 88 mins. Digital projection. An adaptation of John Gardner’s novel Grendel, this animated feature reimagines the epic poem Beowulf through an unexplored perspective: the intimidating but misunderstood monster Grendel. With philosophical musings and a cavorting score, Grendel Grendel Grendel blurs the lines between the nature of man and beast. Written, designed, and directed by the Australian animator and graphic designer Alexander Stitt, the film is characterized by brilliant swaths of color devoid of black outlines. Peter Ustinov is particularly delightful, lending his sly velvety voice to the monster who matter-of-factly devours humans in his realm.
