I Walked With a Zombie

Friday, Aug 26 at 7:30 pm

Location: Bartos Screening Room

Dir. Jacques Tourneur. 1943, 69 mins. 35mm. With James Ellison, Francis Dee, Tom Conway, Edith Barrett, James Bell. Easily the most sophisticated and memorable of the zombie films of the subgenre’s premier era, Tourneur and low-budget producer extraordinaire Val Lewton’s remarkable collaboration is a dreamlike horror fable that loosely reimagines Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre. On the fictional Caribbean island Saint Sebastian, a Canadian nurse Betsy Connell (Dee) arrives to care for her new charge, the wife of sugar plantation owner Paul Holland (B-movie horror fixture Conway). The Hollands, of course, are inextricably bound to the Black community on the island through the legacy of the slave trade, and Holland’s wife Jessica becomes a somber emblem of this tragic kinship.
