IndieCade East 2018: Saturday

IndieCade East is the Museum’s annual celebration of independent games and the people who make and play them. The exciting weekend features dozens of new and unreleased games, a packed schedule of talks, panels, and workshops by designers, developers, players, organizers, thinkers, activists, historians, critics, and provocateurs. IndieCade is the country’s premier Festival for independent video games, dedicated to the discovery, development, and recognition of independent designers and developers from around the world.

Saturday Pass (access to IndieCade East programs, February 17):

Exhibition: IndieCade Presents: A Decade of Game Design

Featuring Anna Anthropy, Tracy Fullerton, Copenhagen Game Collective, David Kanaga, Paolo Pedercini, Nonny de la Pena, Jason Rohrer, and Tale of Tales, this exhibition explores how games grew into a bona fide artistic and expressive medium in the past decade.

Alt Hardware Game Jam with Blinks

Hosted By Shawn Pierre (creator of IndieCade Selections Henka Twist Caper and These French Fries Are Terrible Hotdogs), this one day game jam explores the themes and ideas of Jason Rohrer’s work, with a focus on the arc of a life, through the physical computing platform Blinks, created by Move38.

Documentary VR Workshop with Emblematic Group

Explore the principles and creative ideas behind journalism and documentation in the world of 360 video and VR. The workshop features a conversation between James Pallot of the Emblematic Group and Maureen Towey, formerly of The New York Times Magazine Daily 360 about 360 video and VR as a documenting tool, with a presentation of the cutting edge technology with Sam Quick, a technical artist at Daily 360.

A discussion between IndieCade co-founder Sam Roberts and game artist / scholar Mattie Brice, co-curators of the exhibition. How have games and indie games changed over the last decade? How has the path of design evolved, and what did we see coming then that has now been realized or has yet to happen?

Beyond the Screen

Ubiquitous computing, Internet of Things, Immersive Theater, Physical Computing, Augmented Reality— the stunning growth of technological and artistic possibility for interaction design is driving games, play, and interaction out of our flat screens and into the space of the real world. IndieCade co-founder Celia Pearce explores this brand new world of play in a talk for designers and players alike.

Club Drosselmeyer Post Mortem

How do you build a location-based game for 150 concurrent players and still give them agency? Club Drosselmeyer is an interactive nutcracker that takes place in a 1940s nightclub, complete with an open dance floor, a full band, an original swing score, magic, dance performances, acrobats, multiple storylines, actors, player characters, and lots of puzzles. Join Kellian Adams Pletcher to talk about Club Drosselmeyer 1940, what worked and did not work, how it was structured, and how this year’s game was built based on what was learned from last year’s game, Club Drosselmeyer 1939.

NYU Game Center Presents: Sample Games 101 Class & Play Getting Over It with Bennett Foddy with Bennett Foddy 

Sample an NYU Game Center Class 

Take an NYU Game Center class! Professor Charles Pratt will give his lecture on action games from the school’s hallmark Games 101 course. This foundational course for incoming students at the NYU Game Center. focuses on game literacy—a shared understanding of games as complex cultural and aesthetic objects. 

Getting Over It with Bennett Foddy with Bennett Foddy

Help a man stuck in a pot get over a large trash mountain using only a hammer. This is your chance to play Getting Over It with Bennett Foddy while designer Bennett Foddy provides live commentary.

Audience Engagement: What Immersive Theater Can Teach Game Devs

This workshop features Ed Sylvanus Iskander, one of New York’s leading immersive theater directors in conversation with Robert Nashak, COO of the virtual reality game developer Survios. Iskander will discuss his philosophy and practice of immersive theater, which has fascinating parallels and lessons for game developers. Many of his productions such as Golden Lotus and Caught present a series of sequential activities in analogy with game levels where audience members are invited to continue engaging with the experience on their own terms. His experiments illuminate new paradigms for creating social agency to drive audience engagement and retention.

Night Games

This unique annual event from the IndieCade Festival will transform the Museum into the ultimate live playground, with a selection of games for tabletop and physical play, and featuring the work of many IndieCade alumni. Organized by Pete Vigeant of ESI designs, Night Games will highlight the breadth and wonder that the evolution of games has brought to communal play.
