Dir. Chantal Akerman, 1975, 201 mins. DCP/35mm. With Delphine Seyrig. Akerman’s magnum opus, Jeanne Dielman, 23, quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles meticulously details the daily routine of a widow who cares for his teenage son, occasionally taking a break from cooking and cleaning to see clients in her bedroom as a sex worker. Though its lengthy running time and deliberately slow pace may make it sound like an endurance test, the experience of actually watching the film is incredibly rich and rewarding, due largely to the amazing alchemy between Akerman; cinematographer Babette Mangolte, whose every image is beautiful without being showy; and Delphine Seyrig, whose performance is endlessly nuanced and perfectly guides us to her character’s shocking denouement.
