Khrustalyov, My Car!

Sunday, Jan 30, 2022 at 4:00 pm

Location: Bartos Screening Room

Dir. Aleksei German. Russia. 1998, 150 mins. DCP. In Russian with English subtitles. With Yuri Tsurilo, Nina Ruslanova, Mikhail Dementyev, Jüri Järvet Jr., Aleksandr Bashirov. Moscow, January, 1953: with Josef Stalin on his deathbed, his deathly purges continue, lately targeting Jewish medical professionals paranoically charged with poisoning Soviet officials. Military surgeon Yuri (Tsurilo) is next on the list, sending him on a nightmarish journey into the black heart of Stalinist Russia. German’s jaw-dropping, hilarious, and harrowing masterpiece is in a league, form, and galaxy of its own, pulling on an increasingly outlandish surrealistic thread to unravel the truth of a demented historical reality. Filmed with copious tracking shots through staggeringly elaborate studio sets, featuring one ghoulish and disconcertingly funny character after another, peppered with baroque, perplexing profanity and scatology, and inked in the blackest black and white imaginable, Khrustalyov, My Car! is a tour de force, and a cinematic experience in every conceivable sense of the word.
